About this place
Simmered patiently in a deep pot, the braised oxtail is the natural starting point at Hesomagari. Alongside this rich, melt-in-the-mouth stew, the kitchen also turns out seared oxtail—braised first and then crisped over heat for a savory aroma—and tender braised beef tendon, showing a clear focus on drawing out the savory depth of beef. The other mainstay is dark miso oden, simmered until daikon radish, boiled eggs, and konnyaku take on an intense, dusky hue, with the daikon soaking up flavorful broth all the way to its core.
The menu also stands out for its selection of traditional delicacies, including funazushi from Shiga, salted cured mackerel heshiko, dried sea cucumber ovaries (bachiko), and bitter ayu sweetfish innards (kuru-uruka). Drink-friendly small plates round out the board, from mullet roe with cream cheese and spicy grilled deep-fried tofu drizzled in house-made scallion sauce to spear squid finished with scallions, mayonnaise, and citrusy ponzu. The cellar keeps pace with sake selections such as Gasanryu, regional brews, authentic shochu, a variety of highballs, and draft beer.
Set along a quiet alleyway, the interior is centered on counter seating, creating a calm atmosphere well suited for lingering solo over a drink or stopping in for a relaxed second stop of the night. Service runs from 17:30 in the evening until 23:00, with Wednesdays off; payment is cash only.
